Introduction to Lateral Work



The Exercises in this course are Advanced and Require Collection, as well as Acceptance of your Aids by the horse.

Uses of Lateral Movements: Lateral movements are important tools to supple the horse and help with training problems like straightness. Lateral movement will also encourage better balance, collection, and response to the riding aids. When performed correctly, they ask the horse to move his legs further under his body, thus increasing impulsion and improving movement. They can help build muscle evenly on both sides. They are also required in some competitions, such as Dressage, Western Dressage, and Reining. Additionally, they may have a practical purpose, such as allowing the rider to easily open a gate, or to ask the horse to move sideways to avoid stepping in a hole or running over bad footing.

Incorrectly ridden lateral movements, such as those that emphasize the horse to be forced into a position, rather than maintaining rhythm, relaxation, straightness, and acceptance of the aids, will create more training problems than they solve. The horse will usually become resistant and stiff, instead of more supple. 

Uses of the term "Inside/Outside" with your aids!

 In lateral work, it does not matter where you are in the arena to determining the inside or outside use of your aids, but rather, it is the horse's bend that is considered. No matter how slightly the horse is bent or flexed ie; horse bent to the right, your right leg/rein/seat bone are your inside aids. 


Remeber! The "INSIDE" is always where the horse is looking!
